Expressing confidence that another Kargil war will "never" happen again, top army commander for Ladakh division on Tuesday said the force has strengthened its capacity for technical surveillance and is well equipped with weapons and modern intelligence.

"I am confident that this (Kargil war) will never happen again," General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 14 Corps Lt Gen Ravi Dastane said, while talking to reporters here at the 12th anniversary of the Army's victory in the 1999 Kargil war.

Lt Gen Dastane, who presided over the day's functions after General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command Lt Gen K. T. Parnaik could not reach Drass due to bad weather, said Army has strengthened its defenses and its technical surveillance has also increased.

"We are proud to say that India is a technological power and therefore we are getting those spin-offs to us for better surveillance, better intelligence gathering," he said.

Dastane said Army has procured new surveillance technology and firepower systems to meet its operational requirements.

"We are getting better surveillance systems, better firepower systems...It is enough to meet our operational requirements, it is adequate and we are confident with what we are getting," he said, adding that bunkers at the mountain tops are now manned round the year.

Before the 1999 Kargil war, Indian forces would abandon its positions in the upper mountainous reaches as heavy snowfall and minus 40 degrees Celsius temperature would make it difficult for troops to maintain their posts.

The Kargil war was a long drawn out battle, a tenacious combat that was a fight to the finish. As the whole nation waited with baited breath, the Indian flag firmly fluttered over Tiger Hills on the morning of July 4, 1999 and all of India celebrated. Operation Vijay was successful.

It was one man who became the face of the Indian soldier at Kargil, whose words reverberate even today - 'Yeh Dil Maange More..' Captain Vikram Batra took the advertising slogan and elevated it to a motto for life.

The intrepid soldier lost his life on this day, 12 years ago, while trying to save a fellow soldier.

Here's a look at the ‘Sher Shah' whose valiant efforts paved the way for India's victory in the Kargil war.

LONDON: Ilyas Kashmiri, who had a pathological hatred for India and a long history of launching cross-border terror attacks, had in recent years become obsessed with the idea of provoking a war between India and Pakistan in order to distract Pakistan's attention from its campaign against al-Qaeda, according to a new book Inside al-Qaeda and the Taliban: Beyond Bin Laden and 9/11 by the murdered Pakistani investigative reporter Syed Saleem Shahzad, the only journalist to have interviewed Kashmiri.

As the pressure on al-Qaeda grew, Kashmiri became increasingly desperate to get the Pakistan Army off its back by engineering a confrontation with India “thereby allowing al-Qaeda to manipulate its war against NATO in Afghanistan.'' And it was he — and not Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI, Shahzad insists — who masterminded the Mumbai attacks to “provoke India to invade Pakistan.''

Shahzad claims that in the immediate aftermath of the attacks as “Pakistan and India stood eye to eye, the fighting between Pakistan's military and al-Qaeda militants came to a complete halt'' with militants saying “Qunut-e-Nazla (prayers in days of war).''

I hope both Pak and India realzes such realities cooked up in the mad minds of these unscrupulous elements, especilly Pak that shelters, trains, arms, exports such terrorists against USA, the West and India should realize whoever, so far, attacked Pak Masques, Schools, Hospitals, Military Establishments, Police Stations are all trained & armed by it.

The Lashkar-e-Tayiba and other Pakistani terror groups having links with the Al Qaeda may pose a danger to the United States with their ability to trigger a major crisis for nuclear-armed Pakistan, including a war with India, which may require US intervention.
