BJP MP Tarun Vijay will be questioned by Madhya Pradesh police in connection with the killing of RTI activist Shehla Masood in Bhopal last month.

A police team from the state will soon visit New Delhi in this regard, the police said today.

"Although it has been decided to question Vijay in connection with Shehla's murder, no date has been fixed for the visit of the police team to New Delhi," Bhopal Range IG Vijay Yadav told PTI.

Vijay, who is also spokesperson of BJP, said he was a 'very good friend' of Masood and that he was ready to share with any probe agency whatever information he had.

Masood was shot at when she was in her car in front of her residence in the posh Koh-e-Fiza locality in Bhopal on August 16 when she was just about to head to a rally that was part of Anna Hazare's campaign against corruption.

The Rajya Sabha MP said he and Masood had regularly exchanged notes and demanded that the culprits should be 'booked and hanged'.

"I think that the whole things got politicised. We stand by the family of Shehla and every right thinking Indian will stand by them," he said in New Delhi.

"Whatever information we have, we will be providing to all the investigation agencies, because we are as much concerned to get justice for Shehla," he added.

Congress leader Digvijay Singh demanded that the Masood case be handed over to CBI.

"The way Masood has been killed is painful....Now that Tarun Vijay's name has cropped up, I believe the chief minister should hand over the case to the CBI," the Congress general secretary said.

A communication from the Madhya Pradesh government seeking a CBI probe into the killing has already reached the Centre.

MP BJP President Prabhat Jha told reporters that Vijay may have known Shehla but this itself was not enough to say that he was involved in her murder.

Prabhat said the MP government has already asked the Centre to initiate a CBI inquiry into Shehla's murder.

"I only want that the guilty are not spared and the innocent in the case are not punished," he said.

Vijay said he had talked to Masood last on August 16, the day she was murdered in Bhopal.

"She was the campaigner and convenor for Madhya Pradesh for India Against Corruption. We were regularly exchanging notes. Even on 16th August morning, when Anna was arrested we had spoken in the morning at 9.30 am about Anna's arrest, about the movement, about the demonstration. It is very sad," he said.

Vijay admitted that he knew Masood well and her event management company had organised the programmes in different cities on the occasion of the death and birth anniversaries of BJP ideologue Shyama Prasad Mookerjee.

"Shehla Masood as an event manager and owner of Miracle Company had helped us and worked on several projects in Srinagar, Kolkata and New Delhi. We knew her. She was a brave RTI activist, a very good friend," he said.

Vijay described Masood as a brave, strong activist whose murder has been politicised. He insisted that he would fight till the culprits are brought to book.

"It (Shehla's murder) had hurt us very deepily. We knew her. We want justice for Shehla. Shehla's family is passing through a very difficult time. I think that the whole thing got politicised. We stand by the family of Shehla and every right thinking Indian will stand by them," Vijay said.

He urged people close to Masood to come forward and share information with the investigating agencies.

"We are with them and we will fight it out till the culprits are booked and hanged.... with all our friends we are working vigorously to see that Shehla is provided justice," Vijay said.

ANTI-CORRUPTION & RTI ACTIVIST SHEHLA MASOOD MURDER: MP govt orders CBI probe!

Bhupendra Chaubey, CNN-IBN / Updated Aug 18, 2011 at 09:53pm IST.

Bhopal: Three days after RTI activist Shehla Masood was shot dead outside her house in Bhopal, the Madhya Pradesh government has recommended a CBI inquiry. The decision came after Union minister Jairam Ramesh wrote to the chief minister, pointing at a possible mining mafia involvement in Masood's murder.

State Home Minister Uma Shankar Gupta said, "The family members had expressed concern and demanded a CBI inquiry to the whole incident. The state chief minister while accepting their demand has decided to write to the CBI to investigate into the murder."
The police had initially hinted the death could be a suicide, leading to allegations of a cover-up.
Masood's family hopes a CBI investigation will reveal the truth.
"I'm thankful that the case has been referred to the CBI as the local police had started botching it up. Secretly they were trying to divert attention and convert it into a suicide case," said Sultan Masood, Shehla Masood's father.

Shehla Masood has joined the long list of whistleblowers who have had to pay with their lives for targeting the corrupt. She was shot dead by unknown assailants in Bhopal apparently because of her energetic investigation of tiger poachers. Although she had complained to the authorities about the threats she was receiving after she began inquiries into the death of a tigress in the Bandhavgarh National Park, no protection was provided. Yet, there was undoubtedly a need for the authorities to be alert about the danger she faced because, in addition to her pursuit of poachers, she was engaged in exposing illegal diamond mining in the state.

ANTI-CORRUPTION & RTI ACTIVIST MURDER: Who Killed Shehla Masood!

Hemender Sharma, CNN-IBN / Updated Aug 17, 2011 at 10:12pm IST.

Bhopal: Union Minister Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday wrote to the Madhya Pradesh state urging them to probe the murder of RTI activist Shehla Masood thoroughly, even as CNN-IBN accessed a letter Masood herself wrote to the state government, saying that she had received death threats. The question is if the Bhopal police ignore the clear threats.

Shehla Masood was found murdered outside her residence just as she was leaving for Anna Hazare's rally in Bhopal on Tuesday. The investigations, so far, have yielded little apart from transfers of two top police officials. Sources in the government, have, however revealed that Masood had filed many controversial RTIs related to income tax details about BJP Rajya Sabha MP Anil Madhav Dave and his NGO, as well as the chairman of the Chirayu Medical College and hospital Dr Ajay Goenka. In fact just recently, the Environment Ministry had ordered an enquiry against the Chirayu foundation for flouting environment laws.

Medical and legal experts, in fact, have confirmed that she was murdered.

A prominent Right to Information activist and supporter of social activist Anna Hazare's anti-corruption campaign was shot dead outside her residence in Bhopal on Tuesday morning.
Shehla Masood was shot dead by an unidentified assailant outside her house in the city's posh Koh-e-Fiza locality as she was on her way to an anti-corruption campaign being organised by her and other activists in support of Mr. Anna Hazare at the Bhopal Boat Club.
“We have registered it as a case of unnatural death. Anything more can be said only after the postmortem report,” Bhopal Senior Superintendent of Police Adarsh Katiyar told The Hindu.
Bhopal, not used to the professionally executed metro-style shootout, was stunned at the activist's death. “I am shocked. We had planned a proactive campaign where people would have been asked to write, on a 200-foot-wide banner, about the most corrupt government departments and officers in Madhya Pradesh,” Ajay Dube, RTI activist and long-time associate of Ms. Masood told The Hindu.
Ms. Masood, who also ran an event management company, had managed to constantly annoy the powers that be with her incisive RTI queries and public campaigns, mostly against corruption and for wildlife conservation. She was also a freelance journalist, contributing regularly to news website rediff.com on issues related to the environment and tiger conservation.
Last year, Ms. Masood had told the authorities she “feared for her life” from a senior officer of the Indian Police Service and had complained about the matter to two successive police chiefs of the State.
Ms. Masood had written to the current Madhya Pradesh Director-General of Police S.K. Raut, complaining against a particular officer.
In the letter, Ms. Masood had accused him of harassing her and making threatening calls to her, about which she had lodged a complaint at the city's Maharana Pratap Nagar Police Station in 2008.
“I fear for my life from [him]. Please do the needful and oblige,” she had urged the DGP.
