London:  Bank and credit card details of thousands of British customers held in call centres in India are allegedly being sold for small amounts of money, according to a sting operation conducted by a newspaper.

The Sun today published details of the sting operation in which one Deepak Chuphal offered to pass on bank details, addresses and other personal data of British customers of companies who send such data to call centres in India.

The report once again raised questions about data protection laws in India and demands that British companies bring back call centres to Britain.

The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) launched an investigation based on The Sun's revelations that brokers in Gurgaon and Mumbai were offering such sensitive personal data for sale.

The data can be misused to access funds from the accounts of unsuspecting British customers.

Old news, during the last one decade, with my experience of  over a half a dozen SIMs, of almost every major mobile service provider, I knew that within a few days of activation I start getting spam calls & SMSs; if somebody was not selling my number, how else would these spamsters get to knew my new number?

Pakistan has reportedly decided not to take up an Indian offer to supply electricity because of strategic reasons, with officials claiming such a move could give ‘legitimacy’ to disputed power projects in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Senate or upper house of parliament was informed on Friday by Power Minister Syed Naveed Qamar that his ministry was considering the Indian offer to sell electricity. In a written reply, he said the government is trying to determine if the proposal is feasible.

However, the ‘Dawn’ newspaper quoted its sources as saying that officials had already decided not to proceed with the offer ‘because doing so could lend legitimacy to the Indian power projects’ in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Pakistan has already filed appeals against the Kishanganga hydropower project in the Court of Arbitration at The Hague," said an unnamed official of the power ministry.

The next hearing is expected to be held in the first week of August. "India has massive electricity shortages but they want to sell some power to Pakistan. This will strengthen their claims in the court that they are producing cheap electricity and sharing the gains with Pakistan," the official claimed.

While the ministers are indulging in tall talk about solving the self-finance muddle, an agency working out of a cubicle in front of the government Secretariat offers MBBS seats for Rs 15 lakh each, claiming to represent some of the private colleges in Kerala.

The Malabar Educational and Charitable Trust situated in a commercial complex opposite the Secretariat claims it can ‘arrange’ a few seats in the Kozhikode-based Malabar Medical College.

A trust official, who identified himself as Mr. Jacob Isaac told Deccan Chronicle he had two seats left because customers who had blocked the seats had not turned up.

Mr Isaac told this correspondent, who pretended as the cousin of a prospective candidate, that there was no issue even if the candidate had not appeared for the entrance tests conducted either by the government or the Kerala Private Medical College Management Association.

But the college would conduct its own test, which would be namesake. Besides the Rs 15 lakh donation, only government quota fee would be charged, he said. A pamphlet of the trust was also given to the DC correspondent.
