Citing the Defense of Marriage Act, the Obama administration denied immigration benefits to a married gay couple from San Francisco and ordered the expulsion of a man who is the primary caregiver to his AIDS-afflicted spouse.

Bradford Wells, a U.S. citizen, and Anthony John Makk, a citizen of Australia, were married seven years ago in Massachusetts. They have lived together 19 years, mostly in an apartment in the Castro district. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services denied Makk's application to be considered for permanent residency as a spouse of an American citizen, citing the 1996 law that denies all federal benefits to same-sex couples.

The decision was issued July 26. Immigration Equality, a gay-rights group that is working with the couple, received the notice Friday and made it public Monday. Makk was ordered to depart the United States by Aug. 25. Makk is the sole caregiver for Wells, who has severe health problems.

"I'm married just like any other married person in this country," Wells said. "At this point, the government can come in and take my husband and deport him. It's infuriating. It's upsetting. I have no power, no right to keep my husband in this country. I love this country, I live here, I pay taxes and I have no right to share my home with the person I married."

Wells pleaded with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and President Obama to intervene.

As a tiny boy, Christophe Manshoven always stood out among his mates for the foreign looks that he inherited from his Belgian dad. But later on he passed off as the most Malayali of Malayalis and merged into his gang of friends at the boys’ school he went to in Thiruvananthapuram. Then again he may have reflected the Malayali bit that came from his mom’s side. After school however, circumstances were not quite so friendly. Christophe found he could not continue his studies here and so he took off to Brussels, Belgium.

“It’s been nearly 10 years now. After finishing my Bachelor’s and Master’s, I have been working for a petroleum company called TOTAL for the last five years,” says Chris. He recalls his initial days when he had to deal with the three foreign languages that the Belgians used — French, Dutch and German. “It was tough in the beginning, since I did not speak any of them fluently. However, Brussels has a lot of people from all over the world and so I was able to manage with English until I mastered French.”

New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) 'I was born and brought up in Midnapore in West Bengal. I have come here to earn a living. I am not a Bangladeshi,' pleaded 30-year-old Zakir. However, the identity documents he produced were found to be fake by Delhi Police which wasted no time in deporting him.

Zakir is one of the 140 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who have been deported from the capital, particularly northeast Delhi, in the past five months following a special drive by police.

The drive was launched after a spate of robberies and other crimes showed the involvement of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, police say.
