A middle-aged man was today allegedly beaten to death by policemen at Rambagh area in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district that sparked off a spontaneous protest by the local people, police said.

When the news of the death of Md. Narsuddin reportedly due to beating by the policemen spread, a large number of local people surrounded four policemen and burnt their two motorcycles and a jeep, the police said. The situation was stated to be tense but under control, they said.

Yoga guru Ramdev on Monday alleged in the Supreme Court that Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram was behind the midnight crackdown on him and his followers during the protests on the issue of black money at the Ramlila Maidan last month.

Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani appearing for Baba Ramdev sought a direction that the Home Minister should explain the incident and notice should be issued to him personally.

A bench comprising justices B S Chauhan and Swatanter Kumar said it will consider the plea after getting the response of Delhi police on the June 4 incident and posted the matter for next hearing on July 25.

Mr. Jethmalani said Baba Ramdev had taken a decision not to walk down to Jantar Mantar protest on the issue of corruption and was staying with his followers at the Ramlila Maidan when the crackdown was launched.

He alleged there was no order of externment against Baba Ramdev and therefore Mr. Chidambaram must be called to explain when the decision was taken and why it was taken to get the area vacated.

However, before Mr. Jethmalani began the submissions, the bench asked senior advocate Harish Salve, who was appearing for the Delhi police, that there was need for response on some of the issues on which the law enforcing agency was silent.

The bench questioned the Delhi police for allegedly not registering the FIR on the complaint of the yoga guru’s followers against the alleged atrocities committed by the authorities. The bench said this has to be clarified in an affidavit.

New Delhi:  The Supreme Court has told the Delhi Police to be ready with security camera footage of Baba Ramdev's  yoga camp which ended with a late night lathi-charge, tear-gassing, and the arrest of the yoga icon while he was disguised as a woman.

The court has said it may view 31 hard disks' worth of footage to determine the sequence of events.

Baba Ramdev has challenged the government's version of what happened that night. The camp had been given permission to operate as a mass-yoga-class for 5,000 people.  However, close to 65,000 people were present, the police has argued in earlier hearings.

Baba Ramdev is being represented by famous lawyer Ram Jethmalani, who said in court today that the police has to explain why water-cannons and teargas were used in a closed enclosure, risking the lives of thousands of attendees.  Mr Jethmalani also wanted a notice to be served to Home Minister P Chidambaram on the matter  - the court said it will consider this at a later point.

The yoga guru was on a hunger strike at his camp when it was disrupted by the police.  He, like opposition parties, has described the government's action as "the murder of democracy."

• Government today cast doubts on the veracity of the NHRC report which ruled out rape in Bhatta-Parsaul during the recent farmers' agitation, saying one report cannot negate all the charges.
  "Other agencies have gone and confirmed that women were treated in a way which we are all against. Let us see. Views and counter views are coming. Let me see from where these reports have come," Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni told reporters.
  Congress General Secretaries Rahul Gandhi and Digvijay Singh had visited Bhatta-Parsaul during the agitation. Gandhi had later claimed that women were raped after the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh ordered a crackdown on the agitators and forced them to flee from the two villages.

• Nevermind, NHRC's report, even NCW too hasn't come across any rapes as blurted out by Rahul Gandhi!

And so far, over a dozen News Channels, not to speak of dozens of print-media correspondents, have rummaged the Bhatta-Parsaul Villages and they too haven't been able to dig-out even one rape charge!!

Yes, the police brutality was there and even Children, Women and the Aged nor the properties, crops and all haven't been spared by the UP Police!

Emotional outburst and exaggerations are too common for all of us; one simple 'sorry, I erred' would relieve so many Union Minsters and Congress Leaders of the burden of trying to prove something that hasn't happened!

 For many non-Congress politicians, the Emergency has become the default expression of outrage. Throughout last Sunday, as the country digested the drama surrounding Baba Ramdev's protest in Delhi's Ramlila Ground, the allusions to the 21-month Emergency competed with references to the massacre in Amritsar's Jallianwala Bagh. In this battle over history, Indira Gandhi's coup clearly prevailed over Lt-General Reginald Dyer's trigger-happiness. 

India's political class is naturally prone to hyperbole. If BJP's L K Advani detected "naked fascism" in the police action against Baba Ramdev and prophesied that June would be the UPA government's cruellest month, Congress's Digvijay Singh dubbed the flamboyant yoga guru a "maha thug" that Delhi was well rid of. Predictably, throughout the crisis, neither the prime minister nor the Congress president were seen or heard.

The live weekend drama did resemble a B-grade Bollywood thriller - a helpful BJP even provided the dance numbers during its Rajghat fast. Yet, underneath the apparent farce, there is a grim story that is beginning to unfold, and whose impact may yet be far-reaching. 


I agree that both Anna's and Ramdev's Fast-onto-death rattled like hell, the political authority.


And, I would add that what Anna's ilk have taken their life-times to build 'The Anti-Corruption Movement" through extensive awareness creation on the al-round corruption and an urgent need to root-it-out, our Flip-Flop Ramdev has taken just a few days to sabotage it.


Now, his own skeleton are rolling out, he better keep quite and allow the true champions of -corruption-free-society to handle this noble cause.

Civil society activists Shanti Bhushan and Swami Agnivesh on Sunday criticised the police action to end the hunger strike of Baba Ramdev with former Law Minister calling it an Emergency—like situation and demanding resignation of the Prime Minister.

However, Swami Agnivesh was equally critical of Baba Ramdev saying he should have called off the fast once the government gave him assurances on his demands. But instead he instigated his followers to continue the agitation and innocent men and women were attacked by the police.

Comparing the government’s action to that of Emergency in 1975, Mr. Bhushan said it shows to what extent the government can go to protect black money offenders.

01) I too, as an active member of 'Civil Society', strongly do condemn the flip-flap of the UPA GoI - first  welcoming Ramdev at the IGI airport with a red-carpet, befitting a head of state (four Union Ministers, with the Cabinet Secretary, DG of CBDT) going all the way to meet him to dissuade him from going ahead with his proposed 'fast-onto-death' for bring back all the black-money parked abroad, etc. etc.; then holding a series of discussions with him in a five-star hotel, etc. and even giving certain written assurances, pre-midnight, et al and finally swooping in the midnight to arrest Ramdev and quell the whole 'Satyagrahis', who have converged from across India belonging to all communities, Hindus (along with some Radical elements, who are the scourge of Society), Muslims, Jains, Sikhs and may be some Christians - with brute police force.

02) I also share Swami Agnivesh's agony against Ramdev's instigating the crowd, with inciting speeches and as well as misleading them of his own written commitment given the GoI, secretly; this act of Ramdev smacks of his cunning and manipulative agenda.

03) Under the constant changing of goal-posts by Ramdev, GoI doesn't appear to have any choice than to stop Ramdev's high-profile movement in the name of Anti-Corruption but the using teargas & lathi-charge against the sleeping supporters of Ramdev is highly condemnable!

Finally, I condemn Digvijay Singh of raising so many allegation against Ramdev of possible extortions, abduction, murders to amass massive wealth and also selling so-called Ayurveda medicines (which is purely a commercial activity) under a Society - registered as a 'not-for-profit trust', that acquired income-tax exemptions;  Digvijay Singh is part of the Ruling Party and the UPA Government who, can very well cause investigating agencies to look into those matters, rather than making mere allegations, through media conference, as if he were a helpless 'Civil Society' Member.
